The fire broke out around 9:30 a.m. Wednesday in the 1600 block of South 54th Street.

Officials confirmed to Action News that a woman pulled from the flames died from her injuries Thursday morning.

A second victim, identified by neighbors as the woman's son, was also rescued from the home. He was treated at a hospital and later released.

Video obtained by Action News shows firefighters battling heavy flames and smoke as the fire spread through the house and caused damage to neighboring properties.

"The incident commander placed the fire into 'all-hands' status just a few minutes after arrival. That brought about 60 PFD members to the scene, which included firefighters, officers, EMS providers, and support staff," fire department spokesperson Rachel Cunningham said.

Nearby residents described a frightening scene.

"When I came out of the house, there were so many cop cars and fire trucks," said Basheer Ali, who lives nearby. "It really scared me."

Neighbor Edna Lindsay said her porch sustained damage, though her house remained structurally intact.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. The woman who died has not been publicly identified.
